Nutrition Coaching-Is it worth it?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]How many times have you heard conflicting arguments about food?  “Eat bread! Don’t eat bread! Eggs are terrible! Eggs are awesome! Meat will kill you! Only eat meat!” The contradictory information can be maddening.

The water is murky out there and with the added pressure of social media to get an Instagram worthy body, it’s not surprising that so many people are confused about nutrition.

I think we can all agree that what we eat is important; we know it’s required to get our “goal body” but more importantly it plays a huge role in the health and healing of our bodies, avoiding disease and going down the path of our family history. But the question I ask is, why haven’t you met all your nutrition goals yet if you know how important this is?

3 types of people who would benefit from nutrition coaching

The first step is to understand where YOU currently are. I believe nutrition coaching is for everyone, no matter what stage you are in, but you can start by seeing if you identify with any of the following categories:

  1. The Wanderer: You have a lot of questions about nutrition so you either don’t do anything, constantly wonder if what you are doing is working, or wonder if what you are doing is even the right thing.
  2. The Fighter: You eat healthy foods most of the week (weekends are another story!) but aren’t sure how much to eat. You are not seeing the aesthetic results you want or achieving performance goals in the gym and aren’t sure what to do.
  3. The Stresser: You are aware of how much to eat, what kind of food to eat, and what lifestyle habits work for you. However, subjectively trying to figure out, analyze, and adjust your plan is a stressor you’d rather give to someone else. You can then focus on training and trust the process.

In all three of these scenarios, nutrition coaching can help solve your personal dilemma. I believe that there are countless reasons why having a nutrition coach is important, but I have outlined a few common ones below:

Provides accountability and direction

We are very biased when it comes to judging ourselves and it’s easy to fudge things over or get lost on what to do. We often think we eat better and train harder than we actually do, so having someone else to bounce ideas off of, check-in with, and get support from is really beneficial to getting success and maintaining it.

Encourages a change in mindset

Having someone give you the space each time you meet to talk and process through how the week went, what your wins and struggles are, help identify patterns and bring solutions to the table is so important. Having the knowledge about nutrition is not enough; the discipline to execute the habits consistently is what matters and that starts with identifying thought patterns and strengthening the mindset.

Ensures you can focus on your performance

Remember that rule that body composition is 20% working out and 80% nutrition? When you are killing it in the gym you want to know your nutrition is fueling your gains and recovery. Give the task of figuring out what your body needs and how you are responding to a coach so you can focus on giving your best effort everywhere else.

The bottom line, nutrition coaching covers so much more than what to eat! It works on beliefs, paradigms, self-talk, triggers, and what other stressors are impacting your choices. The goal is to educate, help you build sustainable habits that will last a lifetime, and develop skills you can pull from and implement whenever you need. Building a lifestyle of healthy eating is an eb and flow process– depending on your goals you will want to dial it in in certain seasons, and other seasons you’ll want to dial it back. Having someone to help guide you can make a world of difference!
